This page (http://www.libreoffice.org/download/new-features-and-fixes/) says I can do it in v 3.3 and I've got 3.4, but I can't figure out how to do it.

Use the menu Insert ->Picture ->From file, and navigate to the picture.svg to insert into a writer file.
It does not seem to be possible in LO-Draw, if that is what you were asking as there is no graphics filter for svg.

Ah, I'm blind. When I searched for the picture on my desktop I didn't expect an svg file to have an internet explorer icon. It was there all the time.
Too bad dia's export svg doesn't export properly for me to use it.
Thanks for the help. :)

LibreOffice does not support SVG import - there is currently a problem with this feature. See my comments here;
