Dual screens, loads as one big one, error msg on login, xorg conf

I get the following error after I login :-


Could not apply the stored configuration for monitors

none of the selected modes were compatible with the possible modes:
Trying modes for CRTC 351
CRTC 351: trying mode 3360x1050@50Hz with output at 1680x1050@50Hz (pass 0)
CRTC 351: trying mode 3360x1050@50Hz with output at 1680x1050@50Hz (pass 1)


And when I goto Displays, it shows up as "Unknown" 3360x1050

How can I get this to detect my two Dell screens correctly (driven via a NVIDIA card and driver)

xorg.conf file attached.

You're probably not getting replies because you're not supplying needed details.

What Ubuntu release are you running?

If it's version 11.04 or newer, then rename the xorg.conf file to something else and reboot. That file isn't needed in recent Ubuntu versions.

If I knew what details were needed, I'd probably know a lot more about it, and therefore be able to fix it myself!

So now that you've asked/prompted me, I am using 11.10, with Gnome.

Thanks for your suggestion, I moved xorg.conf and lost one of my two monitors!
Putting it back restored my setup, so im back to square one.
I think we can safely say that it is used.

Anyone else got any ideas??

You need to use the nvidia-settings program (started as root using sudo ndivia-settings) to configure the dual displays. Once you have done this, there is a button at the bottom right of the application to save the settings to xorg.conf. Reboot, and bob's your uncle.

Using nvidia, I sorta of knew that. that doesnt really help answer the question.

Now come on... attitude check - people are trying to help you! I'm somewhat dyslexic and made a typo. I'm sure you can see that was meant to be 'sudo nvidia-settings'.

Thanks, but I think it falls a little short of showing everything, its just one page, and I have the same setup as you've shown anyway.

We really need to be talking in terms of xorg.conf, thats how to confirm settings, can you post yours please?

Hi

I have a similar problem but can find no resolution in the forum. When my laptop is connected to my TV (Using s-video until I get a new HD telly) The screen on the lappy shows the programme launcher but the TV does not (they are setup as twinview) How can I get the launcher on BOTH monitors so I can control the lappy when looking only at the TV screen. Oh by the way I am using a Rii 2.4Ghz Mini keyboard with touchpad (bought from Amazon £28 ish) to control it from over 5m away and this works well with Bunty Ocelot. I don't want to poke around too much in nvidia setup without some advice - I also need to use the lappy on its own at times so cannot lose the LED panel screen settings.

Lappy is a Vaio with 15" Bravia screen, twin 320Gb drives, loadsa RAM, etc.
Running Bunty Ocelot/Gnome 3

Don't give up just yet!

I think you have to configure your second screen as a separate X screen rather than "Twinview" this requires you to restart X (log off and on again I think does this). It's worth a try anyway as you seem to be getting nowhere with Twinview.

I cured my need for launchers on my second screen by following instructions here:

Thanks for the guidance on this issue, thaelim. I (was having) the same issue, but it was miraculously cured when I referenced your screenshot. My dual display is working as advertised now, but I'm still getting the error message on login/X Server restart.

(I've been using Ubuntu for, ohhhhh 48 hours now, so feel free to correct my noobish)

Sidenote: under system info, Graphics is listed as unknown. Any relation maybe?

Additional sidenote: on the top panel, the User Login and Settings menus no longer stay open with a single mouse click. I now have to click and hold. No clue why that would be related.

i had the same problem, but found a solution that worked for me and my two monitors are up and running. I thought i'd share this with you.

I followed these steps and everything worked fine.

Try to completely remove your nvidia drivers from your system:
sudo apt-get purge nvidia*

Remove your xorg.conf
sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Reinstall xorg completely
sudo apt-get install --reinstall xserver-xorg-core libgl1-mesa-glx:i386 libgl1-mesa-dri:i386 libgl1-mesa-glx:amd64 libgl1-mesa-dri:amd64

Re-configure Xorg
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

Reboot
sudo reboo

After the reboot my monitors were both displaying the same picture so i opened the "Displays" Setting from System Settings and i uncheked the "mirror displays" option.

i hope this will help you guys.

It worked the first shot, flawlessly for me. My graphics card is still listed as unknown, and I haven't tested it with any demanding graphics; the extent to which this will actually FIX the problem is still unknown to me. The entire thread this came from is about this problem, if you wish to look for other solutions. Good luck.

The steps as given by drmeuler (I had to remove the amd64 bits tho) is the only solution that worked for me.

I have tried so many options, after about a year of just using 2D unity or accepting my monitor as one big screen, I followed drmeulers steps ...and rebooted, then went back to my display/screen properties and removed mirror/duplicate monitors ...and viola ... suddenly both my monitors was now picked up !
