No, we're as little as two hours behind or as much as five hours behind, depending on the state.

can you hook other pcs up to the imac easily? I kind of want one in the future fore the simple fact that it has such a high resolution and monitors alone will cost a fortune at that resolution.

Surprise! Surprise! I Switched DE again :D

Am now using Gnome Shell again, because I heard it's getting better and better with the Shell and v11.12 - that might be released mid-December - might fully work.

I have edited the Zukitwo Shell theme to suit my preferences (Ubuntu orange, more spacing on the application overview), threw together an icon set consisting of Faience, standard Gnome and FS Ubuntu icons and finally, edited the Radiance theme to play nicely with the Global Menu Extension. All in all, I'm really satisfied (and proud :D)

Yeah, it was your Star-Trek thing that did it for me. I'm not gonna do Star-Trek, but the idea using a wallpaper, conky, window manager theme, and terminal theme that fit together seamlessly is very attractive to me, and herbstluftwm + urxvt is perfect for that. I just have to find the time to write a new .conkyrc and gimp up a good wallpaper.

Thanks! It's all wallpaper except for the conky clock and terminal displays (htop, mediaplayer and scrot). The terminals were embedded by using a window manager (cwm) with window borders set to 0 and urxvt with backgrounds set to transparent. I found the wall online and then added the Federation logo. I quite agree. As much as I loved Xubuntu, Lubuntu just blows it out of the water in terms of speed and the care that went into it.

That being said, here's my Lubuntu screen. The wallpaper is one of the defaults from Zorin OS that I saved to my pictures :lolflag:

Yep. = ) Here. (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/17749392/Standby-style%20Shell%20status%20icon%20for%20Faenza-Dark.zip) I'd set this up for Faenza Dark, and you can just extract the folder contents to .icons; it'll either replace Faenza's status icons (if they're installed in .icons) or supersede them for your user account (if they're installed globally.)

It's the same icon six times, so it doesn't give any status feedback. Alternately, you can delete all of them but user-offline-symbolic.svg and have it switch back to the chat bubble while you're available.

Yeah, but the metadata.json said 3.2. If it's a 3.0 extension, you have to change that same file to make it appear at all. When extensions are "packaged" to work in the version you're using but break, it's usually for another reason (changes to the shell within the cycle, differences between distros (minimal but worth noting) or other conflicts.)

Changed my desktop wallpaper for my Ubuntu's KDE desktop environment, main desktop activity. The color-change Triforce logo slideshow looks nice, but doesn't seem to work well with my Oxygen Transparent theme.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v245/viperdvman/Screenshots/ScreenshotUbuKDE6b.jpg

The wallpaper itself came from twilightrealm.net (http://twilightrealm.net) (the site's getting an overhaul as of 12/8/2011). All I did was add the Triforce crest and the Legend of Zelda logo, using mostly dodge and burn techniques. Simple techniques, but I like using a more colorful wallpaper to for my transparent windows to look good over top of. Besides, I've done Link wallpapers, Saria wallpapers, and miscellaneous Zelda wallpapers numerous times... but never a Princess Zelda wallpaper. :)

I haven't done an extension with the hostname instead of the Activities Button yet, but I've done a very simple extension allowing you to change the button text.

Just untar it in the ~/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions

Sticking with my Zelda theme, moving it over to the netbook. Yes, I run Oneric with Unity on the netbook, and it runs great :)

Same customized Princess Zelda background as on my desktop's Ubuntu KDE (note: not Kubuntu.... but Ubuntu with KDE installed). I still have the same default Ambiance themes, with the modified Ambiance Dark Nautilus theme I got from WebUpd8. I redid my Zelda wallpaper for a friend in 1080i, then slightly redid it for my netbook. I did have to go into Ubuntu Tweak and remove my Home folder and mounted drives since they don't fit with the Zelda wallpaper and Unity. I also have transparency set on both my Unity panel and Unity launcher, so the top panel looks more blue than normal Ambiance.

I tried it on my Acer Aspire One A150 (N270 Atom, 1.5GB Ram, Intel GMA 945) and it struggles and drains a lot of power. Which is a shame since it's pretty decent on my Viewpad 10 Tablet (N455 Atom, 2GB DDR3, Intel GMA 3150) and Laptop.

So I'm sticking with LXDE. :)

Gnome3 on a netbook? How well does it run?

Debian's Gnome builds are really light on resources. Gnome 3 is almost as lightweight as Gnome 2 (maybe 5-10mb of RAM heavier at boot).

It's also surprisingly stable for a first version. The only odd behavior I've noticed is that touchpad taps can be a bit laggy. I don't use my netbook very often so I can't say for sure that the behavior wasn't present in Gnome 2, but it seems more noticeable in Gnome Shell. My thought is that it might be related to desktop compositing (didn't use compositing in Gnome 2).

Beyond that, Gnome 3 runs as well as Gnome 2 did. My netbook has never been a speed demon (single core Atom, 1GB of RAM).

Copper Bezel
December 13th, 2011, 10:21 PM
Run synclient -l and see what SingleTapTimeout is set to. Default is 180 in Ubuntu, but as of 11.10, it needs to be adjusted on some trackpads for other reasons to ~320. See this bug (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-input-synaptics/+bug/874675) for changing the default (#13).

Gnome Shell is very laggy on if video is playing on my Ubuntu netbook, much moreso than Compiz. It doesn't make it unusable or anything - it just means that watching a video and surfing at the same time usually leads to some stuttering in the video and that the transitions in the desktop effects get skipped. 1.6Ghz, 2G of RAM, SSD storage.

@Copper Bezel
Thanks. I'll take a look at the settings. I run Debian, not Ubuntu, so I'm not sure whether the same issue applies.

I wonder if my better experience with Gnome Shell can be attributed to using Debian or to my lower expectations of acceptable netbook performance.

Copper Bezel
December 14th, 2011, 12:37 AM
Yeah, either is definitely possible. I don't know how much difference there is between Ubuntu and Debian under Shell, and I admit that I'm pickier about performance than I have any right to be on a netbook (ten windows open, several browser tabs, a separate display plugged in running a DVD or a full-screen HTML5 video, and I'm complaining about the desktop effects.) What I can say objectively is that Compiz behaves under that strain a little better than Shell does, but it's not a big enough difference to make me switch to Unity (under which, incidentally, the scenario I just described would be a window management nightmare.)

And yeah, I don't know whether the trackpad issue is universal, but check definitely that value with synclient. That change reduced a lot of headaches for me.

Yes, I made that one too (I make most of my wallpapers, even if I contribute only a logo, styled text, and/or whatever), using elements from about 6 or 7 different holiday and anime angel wallpapers, as well as a few lens flare effects. The other one is a poorly done copy of the Apple wallpaper with the Ubuntu logo pasted over the apple. Don't believe me? find the other wallpaper and you'll notice that the splatter doesn't match mine (it is a perfect match for the Apple version, just with an improperly aligned and ubuntu sloppily pasted over the Apple logo)

My new rig (see below) with ubuntu set up and configured. I have yet to make a conky script (got the VinDSL tutorial in my Bookmarks, have yet to find the time to read it). I will also fiddle around with Gnome 3 shell after i got Conky set up.

Ubuntu 11.10
Unity Ambience theme
Equinox Window theme with Faenza icons

I'm in the exact center of the state... Payson.

How about you?!?!?

A little further south :D I live in Glendale.

And I'm wondering what panels or programs those are. Is the bottom a panel of some type, and the side a conky? Two panels/window managers? How'd you get that look? It's nice!

Yeah, it's extremely slick. There's some Conky on the left, and the panel could be modified from Gnome's (fallback) or KDE's, but damn - it's pretty. Very pretty. I love the Droidy use of the Home icon. (Makes me wish again my netbook was one of the ones that shipped with that glyph for Super in place of the Windows flag.)

Excellent shots everyone. @procter, for my taste, that's the best Unity setup I've ever seen.

^I like the nick change, Unia. Does it signify you "falling" back to Ubuntu? :P
Good looking blingy widgety setup. Not sure what kind of work has been put into it (I don't use Gnome) but it does look pretty cohesive for the most part. :)

On topic. Derp....

Haha, I actually registered here first before coming to the Crunchbang boards, so Unia is the change from FallenUnia! Thanks for the comment, I know it takes alot to make you like clickety blingy setups! :D
