Boot Ubuntu

Hi,
My Ubuntu 10 suddenly stopped booting to the desktop UI. I am able to boot in recovery mode or drop to the root login from there. The UI just freezes after booting and before logging in. I have not made any change recently though I am suspecting my hard disk.

Can anyone suggest a solution ?

Try reinstalling your desktop environment
sudo apt-get install --reinstall _________
You might loose you customizations or personalizations

Thanks. I installed xubuntu as the new desktop but again the xubuntu screen shows but still it freezes and there is no login screen.
