Hi

I have just downloaded the latest updates to Oneiric, amongst then was the following:-

unity-2d
unity-2d-panel
unity-2d-places
unity-2d-spread

If you don't have accelerated graphics you may need these. However if you are happily running 'unity' in accelerated graphics (probably the norm for most people) then upon reboot you will discover unity and unity-2d both appear as Launch Panels and make a £$^%& mess!

Just enter Synaptic Package Manager (go through dash home or enter in terminal) and remove the unity-2d packages. Reboot and calm is restored.
