View Full Version : [ubuntu] Computer boot issue after updates to ubuntu 11.0

I recently installed the latest version of ubuntu (11.10 i think) off of the website using the option to install it alongside windows. Everything was working fine except after it updated today. After I tried to turn my laptop on after I came home from work I recieved a message saying bootmgr not found and it won't progress any further.

I've tried using Plop boot manager from a cd but i still get the same message.

Both ubuntu and windows 7 are installed on the same hard drive, which has an additional 2 partitions that were present when i bought the laptop.

My laptop is a lenovo g3000 series 530, With a 2.2Ghz dual core pentium, 3gb ddr2 ram.

Can anyone help me? I'd rather not format the hard drive completely and do a full reinstall of both ubuntu and windows as I've got lots of music and pictures that aren't backed up and while not essential I'd rather not lose them.

Welcome to the Ubuntu forums. :-)

It would be best if we get a look at your boot files and status.

From an Ubuntu LiveCD or other Linux bootable CD/DVD/USB, boot to the Desktop and download/run the Boot Info Script from a terminal (Upper left DASH/HOME button, Gnome-Terminal).

Post the contents of the RESULTS.txt file it generates. That will let us give you specific guidance rather than guessing.

You can get to the script's download page by pressing the "BIS" link in my signature.

Another option would be to use the Boot Repair app (also linked in my signature). That one you'd have to try on your own until we have more information, but it may restore your system without us.

This is the results.txt file that I got using the BIS.

I tried using the boot repair cd but that didn't solve the problem unfortunately. When I live boot from a usb I can still get access to all the files that are on the main hard drive partition so if necessary i might be able to transfer the files across before wiping everything but if there's a way I can avoid this it'd be great.

I'm not a Windows user but it appears you will need to use the Windows CD to repair your Windows OS. The MBR of your hard drive has TestDisk rather than Windows information, so you will need the Windows CD to repair the MBR and boot folders.

I believe Win 7 will offer to repair things when you start the CD/DVD. Allow it to do so.

If this isn't enough information, we'll wait until a W7 user comments.

At that point, a Wubi user can tell you how to restore your Wubi boot or you can visit the Wubi Megathread (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1639198) for instructions.

Not only that, you are missing two out of three windows boot files. winload.exe is on the win7 partitions, which is where it's supposed to be.
However, you are missing bootmgr and boot/bcd which can be on the same partition, or can be on separate one. sda1 has the boot flag, according to that they should be on sda1.

Usually win7 dvd using the Repair This Computer function can repair both the missing boot files and the MBR bootloader.
