Just tried to install the latest version and after a long download, received a 'Code 2' installation error.
I've looked at the log file, but frankly it means very little to me.
Anyone have any idea as to what a code 2 installation error is and how to resolve it ??

Thanks

Did you checked md5sum (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM) and after burning at lower possible speed check disc for errors. If any of this doesnīt help download same iso with torrent and point download to the folder where your existing iso is.Torrent will just check iso and replace bad files with good ones. You will not download complete iso.

Thanks for that ...but it doesn't mean a blind thing me. Not everyone lives, eats, drinks, sleeps computers you know.

I guess this operating system is for Geeks so I'll leave it well alone. Thanks anyway for your time.

I didn't download via a torrent ... it was the Windows Installer file which was here :

http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/windows-installer

... once the download finished it started to self install ... then reported the Code 2 error

If you look here :
http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/windows-installer and scroll towards the bottom, it got as far as the installer window with the two green progress bars then after a long time, stopped, and reported the error.

Other than that I didn't go anywhere near a torrent download ... it came directly from the Ubuntu site.

Thanks for the response ... but the web page where the download resides makes NO reference to this so how on earth are you supposed to know ?!?!?!

From a quick scan of the info in the link, I refer back to my original comment ... 'an operating system for Geeks ...' not for the common man !

I think it's one to avoid ... looks even more of a minefiield than Linux !

Nobody told that you should know about problem you can run into with Wubi installer. If you have some free space you can try to install ubuntu on separate partition.Maybe even better you can try to install Ubuntu in Virtual box.You can download and install it from here. (https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads)Download regular ubuntu iso from here (http://releases.ubuntu.com/oneiric/) ( watch witch architecture you are downloading I will suggest 32 bit) and if you like it install it on separate partition. If you need more info, just ask.

Thank you for the input ... however I am very dubious about making any serious changes to the HDD given the huge numbers of installation errors that people are reporting.

I would simply prefer to run it from a USB stick in the first instance to see if it actually works or, apparently not. Given that the 'Official' installion guideance which is present on the web site (and download links) it strikes me that if people are having to make all sorts of different installation options for the OS that it is far from stable or indeed a usable option to Windows or indeed Linux itself.

I struggle to understand why the official downloads and installations should be so fraut with problems if the OS is supposed to be stable!?!?

Once agin I have to say, it's defo an OS for Geeks ! and NOT fo the common man.

I finally got the darn thing to install using the Windows installer file !

However, when I boot into the OS (choice between Windows XP & Ubutu at the boot screen) I am unable to use the keyboard/touchpad and the OS seems unable to utilise the internet connection or the builtin web cam.

The notepad is an 'ACER Aspire one' model : ZG5

Anyone have any idea what the problem may be ???

Thanks
