The U.S. Department of Defense makes much use of Linux. See, e.g., http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1023047/posts

There was a thread in the forum with a picture of the actual Avatar designers working on the models under KDE 3.

Heavy visual effects require supercomputers and those almost always use Linux.

It's highly likely. Linux is commonly used on servers and big systems, so a render farm running Linux wouldn't be at all unusual. Linux is the only OS mentioned on Weta Digital's online recruitment forms.

Well, here's a short piece about Paul Gunn, a systems administrator for Weta Digital (the company that provided the special effects for Avatar), wherein it is noted that the server farm and most of the desktops at Weta run Ubuntu (http://blog.dustinkirkland.com/2010/01/39000-core-ubuntu-cluster-renders.html) (as opposed to RHEL, as previously reported by the media).

Is that enough of a source/proof for you?

EDIT: If you need further research, you may want to click here (http://www.lmgtfy.com/?q=weta+digital+linux).

Yes, thanks. Though the people at Techie Buzz should really provide sources and proofs in their articles, lol.

Google uses Linux on all their servers.

They also use Ubuntu (their own custom version of it) on a good number of their workstations.

Not Ubuntu .. but Lowe's uses an enterprise version of Red Hat. (except their paint department.) Many US universities use a version of Linux .. UC Berkeley's BOINC project uses a Debian based Linux. NASDAQ uses Linux .. not sure what flavor.

I have just been reading issue 54 of Full Circle Magazine. On page 20 under the heading: Howto - Ubuntu for Business and Education it says this:

Andalucía, think of it as a state in Spain, in 2003, established a law to use free software. To that effect, in 2003, a Linux distribution was created to use in schools. The distribution is called Guadalinexedu, a mixture of Ubuntu and Guadalinex. It is in use in over 2,500 centers and 500,000 computers.

Regards.

If anything it would be more secure since the goverment can't take any chances with security and has a ton of money to throw at security.
