Did everyone already know this? Anyway, I get excited when I discover unsuspected famous Linux users.

He's upgrading to Oneiric this morning, apparently, and getting into the Unity-versus-classic-Gnome-versus-Gnome3 mess.

PS: I really hope I don't get replies saying "WTF is Stephen Fry?"... :-/

Well i am sure you will, he is hardly an International superstar, there will be many people on these forums who have never heard of him. Perhaps for the american crowd you should mention he is Gregory House MD best mate ;-)

He's been a Linux fan for years, though he also loves his Apple products.

WTF is stephen fry?

Nah... just kidding. :) I did see him in Linux Format mag, but I didn't realise he ran Ubuntu. We need him to promote it a bit more.

I always thought of him primarily as a Mac user/fan. I know he did the GNU birthday thing, but I'm not convinced he is a "Linux user" personally.

Maybe Ubuntu could get them to use Ubuntu lappies in the House series instead of all those Apple lappies?

well stephen fry is nothing to do with House, and the apple laptops are a brand/manufacturer not indicative of what OS it is running, there is no Ubuntu laptop, only a laptop running Ubuntu.

Those apple laptops could be running Ubuntu and you would know no different

He has been described as "deeply dippy for all things digital (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_technology)", claims to have bought the third Macintosh (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macintosh) computer sold in the UK (his friend Douglas Adams (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Douglas_Adams) bought the first two) and jokes that he has never encountered a smartphone (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smartphone) that he has not bought.[106] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephen_Fry#cite_note-105)

Steve's a technophile, OpenSource enthusiast and most of all HUGE Apple fan. He does use Ubuntu, but day to day, is a Mac guy through and through.

And sometimes he's pretty cool, and sometimes he sounds like an idiot.

It is the non-famous Linux users that are the real fans.

wtf is a 'Fry' let alone a 'Stephen' fry. i'd love to try some sometime (earlier this evening i had some really good gerkin fries, i wonder if they're related).

ps. i once saw Stephen Fry on conduit street (or was it Berkley sq), i think he was drinking a Gin and Tonic.

Who is he, and why should I care at all about him?

Because he's enormously smart and funny.

As stated, Fry loves all things digital, and he hates Windows!

he presents 'QI', was in 'Balckadder', 'jeeves and wooster' and 'the Fry and Laurie show', he's done some voice stuff and acted oscar wilde in 'Oscar Wilde'. he's done loads of stuff, but is also a technophile (hence the open source promotion etc.).

Possibly more recognizable for the North American crowd, he was in V for Vendetta.

System76. (http://www.system76.com/)

That is a System 76 laptop not an Ubuntu laptop, running Ubuntu does not mean it was made by Ubuntu.

If house started using that then instead of seeing the apple logo you would see a system 76 logo

i think system76 laptops do actually have Ubuntu logos on them (where you would otherwise have a 'Windows key').
