View Full Version : [ubuntu] 11.10 install archive failure.

The last two times I have updated the system, I have received an error "InstallArchives() failed".

Does anyone know how to find out what is causing this, and if anything can be done about it?

I have also noticed that when I use "sudo apt-get upgrade" I get the following.

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
1 not fully installed or removed.
After this operation, 0 B of additional disk space will be used.

dpkg: error processing winbind (--configure):

Again, no idea what's going on here.

Your sources lists seem to be Ok, but you have a partially installed package.

try:

sudo apt-get -f install

You have 'permission' corruption.

You may have done an install not using 'sudo', or the install tried to do something it shouldn't (and was aborted).

1. You need to exit all software, and re-start Linux.

2. You also need to document the exact commands that were used to 'install', that may have caused this ..

I will restart Linux and see if that helps.

As for the exact procedure that started this, I only notice this problem when I'm updating, and I only update through the update manager. I suppose it could have been caused by something else I installed, but I always either use the software center or 'sudo' in the terminal.

How would one go about fixing a permission corruption?

I found your issue elsewhere ..

Fails to boot after upgrade, stuck on winbind package
http://askubuntu.com/questions/66606/fails-to-boot-after-upgrade-stuck-on-winbind-package

You need to do two things:

sudo dpkg --purge winbind

sudo dpkg --configure -a

After you resolve this, and assuming you are using Samba (Windows support), you need to re-install 'winbind'.

You need one of these (if the first fails, then use the second).

sudo apt-get -f install

sudo apt-get install winbind

That's quite amazing! Thanks for all the help! (I was rather dreading the prospect of a re-install, or switching back to Windows.)

Edit: So, I entered in those things and go this:

tao@tao-Studio-1555:~$ sudo dpkg --purge winbind
[sudo] password for tao:
(Reading database ... 137789 files and directories currently installed.)
Removing winbind ...
* Stopping the Winbind daemon winbind [ OK ]
Purging configuration files for winbind ...
Processing triggers for man-db ...
Processing triggers for ureadahead ...
ureadahead will be reprofiled on next reboot
tao@tao-Studio-1555:~$ sudo dpkg --configure -aI assume a reboot is all that's required now? (And possibly resinstalling winbind though 'sudo apt-get'?)

That should cover it.

Ah, yes.

I have followed those instructions. When I get to the step

sudo apt-get -f install it results in

David006

Then you need to manually install 'winbind', using apt-get.

It did not 'discover' that it is needed by Samba.

You know how to clear this problem.

The question is:

Do you need 'samba' and 'winbind' on your PC?

If so, who installed it (and can they assist in its proper re-install)?

Monara
November 18th, 2011, 06:08 AM
I think I can live without it.

As far as I know, Samba and Winbind came with 11.10 when I installed it onto this computer. I suppose re-install might fix this problem, but I think I'll just opt to go without winbind.

Thanks for all your help, David!
