From other threads I've been reading, unity 3d is not able to work on vncserver, I found one that referenced using
[ -x /etc/vnc/xstartup ] && exec /etc/vnc/xstartup
[ -r $HOME/.Xresources ] && xrdb $HOME/.Xresources
vncconfig -iconic &
#gnome-session --session=gnome-classic &
gnome-session --session=ubuntu-2d &
However, the only way I can get a gnome-session is to use the gnome-classic option, looks like I'm unable to get unity-2d to work, would like to figure out what I'm doing wrong.
This was an upgrade from 11.04 to 11.10, vncserver was working prior to the upgrade.
