I thought I'd share how I got rid of the awful overlay scrollbars, I'm not sure this works for Unity as I just tried it in Gnome but this fix restored a normal scrollbar throughout the desktop http://www.webupd8.org/2011/04/how-to-disable-overlay-scrollbars-in.html
