Application switcher smaller icons?

We know that the new Desktops are beset by BIG SHINY BUTTON syndrome. One of my particular dislikes is the application switcher in both Unity and Gnome which has enormous icons. Any wa to make the icons smaller like in Gnome Classic?

In Unity 3D from CCSM > Unity Plug-in > Experimental the size can be dropped to 32 pixels . Unity 2D has no such option.

I found a way to alter the Gnome Shell CSS to reduce icon size in 3.0 but not for 3.2 and the instruction was for Fedora . I have not investigated any further .

@Frogs Hair: the problem is the icon size in the application switcher (Alt-Tab), not the launcher.
