View Full Version : [SOLVED] Upgrade or Fresh Install?

I'm guessing it's going to be more of a thrash to upgrade and try to save and restore a configuration than to do a clean new install.

When I eventually move from 11.04 to 12.04, I'd like to do so w/o the Unity bit and w/o having to remove it (again). Same for LibreOffice, as I prefer Lotus Symphony. But, other than installing my preferred applications and getting rid of Unity and LibreOffice, the only degree of customization is in my fstab file, which I CAN save and selectively copy from.

This is a verbose way of asking: any strong arguments for doing an UPGRADE vs a FRESH INSTALL?

Thanks.

There is no argument

With upgrading the possibilities to fail are 80%.

With fresh install 10%.

Lately I avoid to keep even the partition /home unformatted. There are a plenty of config files creating discrepancies.

I tend to agree. Thanks. Others are welcome to jump in, but otherwise I'm going to marked this solved in a bit.

Fresh install. Actually I have never upgraded but from the number of posts reporting problems after upgrading it seems that upgrading can cause many more issues than a fresh install.

Fresh Install. Nothing beats that fresh from the disk feeling.

Thanks all. Will stick with the less complicated route.
