Packard Bell PAV80 netbook running ubuntu 10.04 will not start this is the message I get on my screen.

mounting /dev on /root/dev failed: no such file or directory
mounting /sys on /root/sys failed: no such file or directory
mounting /proc on /root/proc failed: no such file or directory
target file system does not have /sbin/init
no init found. try passing init= bootarg

busybox v1.13.3 (ubuntu 1:1.13.3-1ubuntu11) built-in shell (ash)

(initramfs)

Any help would be apreciated.

p.s. this is my girlfriends laptop, she told me that she opened the lid and the password box never appeared. she then manually shut it down (by holding down the power button) and now this message appears.
