upgrading from 9.04 fail

I go to the update manager and try to update to 10.04. As soon as it begins a window pops up and it say -Can not upgrade. An upgrade from 'jaunty' to 'lucid' is not supported by this tool.
seriously wtf?

Also when I go to add and/remove applications everything I try to download from there isn't working. The download fails. I thought if I updated the version it would fix the problem but I can't even do that ;~;

Ubuntu 9.04 reached its "end of life" in October 2010 and is no longer supported. Therefore you need to follow a few extra steps to upgrade: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EOLUpgrades

You might also consider backing up your data and doing a fresh install of 10.04 (or 11.10). This might actually be faster and less hassle than trying to upgrade.

I don't think that from 9.04 you can upgrade. You should make a fresh install.

Furthermore 9.04 is not supported anymore

@dreaminghosts, the link snowpine posted will help you to get your 9.04 system fully updated from the old-realeases repositories, but to get to 10.04 you need to upgrade to 9.10 first and 9.10 is also now unsupported. You need a trick to convince the system that 9.10 is still supported. Have a look here:

That workaround worked for me last August, but I don't know whether it will still work. It may be better for you to make a fresh installation of 10.04.

Hello,

You have to download which ever version you decide you want and burn it to a cd. You then install from the cd or usb. You should back-up first if there is stuff you want to save on the old install first though.
