More than half of my RAM stopped working, and now i have only 256mb left (temporarily).
Im currently on ubuntu 11.04 and is taking up almost 200mb without any apps, witch makes my pc slow.
Does ubuntu 8 or 9 take up less RAM, and would my pc run faster if I switch to it?

No, you will not be able to notice any difference between versions of Ubuntu. 256MB is too small.

Probably the best you could do is Lubuntu, but I don't know if you want to reinstall the OS while you wait to fix the RAM issue.

Have you check the RAM itself? Sounds like a stick of RAM went bad. Are there multiple sticks of RAM, if so swap their postions and see if the problem changes. If it does probably a bad stick of RAM.

Yes i checked it - it went very bad together with my old motherboard, and I was just wondering if my computer will run faster with any of the older Ubuntu versions, till I can save money for a new DDR400 memory stick
