Viglen "LCD PC", graphics garbled on boot

Hi,

I've been given a Viglen "LCD PC" to try to turn it into a cheap web browsing machine running Ubuntu.

Left to it's own devices you get a screen full of garbage, the screen's being driven at a wrong resolution by the looks of it.

Adding
nomodeset as a kernel param boots fine, you get 1024x768 24bit fine, using the software video driver.

I tried adding vga=792 (1024x768x24) as a kernel param and you just get a black screen, or more garbled, can't remember which right now.


hwinfo --framebuffer lists mode 792 as supported.

Can anybody help sort this out?

Monitor: 15" XGA LCD Panel (supporting a resolution of 1024*768 256K colors)

OK, still bashing away at the problem.
I tried various things from the sticky thread in this section, the only thing that made any difference is editing the grub defaults file and setting the mode to 1024x768.

The only thing that does is give me a high resolution screen IN the grub menu

Handy, but doesn't fix the problem.

The following kernel params do nothing:

vga=xxx
xforcevesa

I've attached a screen shot fwiw, it looks like the screens being driven out of range.

Ubuntu has booted and sits at gdm, you can sometimes tap the power button and it will shut down.

ctrl+alt+f1 will switch to terminal, but still garbled.

the kernel param nomodeset will work, 1024x768x24 with a software rasteriser.

I've tried updating the OS and there are no binary drivers to install.
I'll post lshw next from the machine itself.
