Hi all.
I've been trying to download Skpye on a laptop which is using the latest ubuntu system but it doesn't want to open the software centre for me to download it. is this a common problem for the programme or is it the laptop just acting up?

What did you download? You should get either the ubuntu 10.04+ 32bit or 64 bit deb file as appropriate to your install from the skype website.

You can Install SKYPE with following commands run in the Terminal:

$sudo apt-get update

$sudo apt-get install skype

Does your laptop has pre-installed UBUNTU?
Is it Ubuntu 11.10 "Oneiric Ocelot"?
