I am new to Ubuntu and just installed 11.10 on my machine. I initially down loaded both of these programs via "ubuntu software center. they both claimed they were installed, however, during the install it stopped and said "installarchives() failed reading database" I selected OK and it finished, claiming both of them were installed. when I select the icon for "samba" nothing really happens and no screen comes up for making my settings? I removed both programs and installed using apt-get - no difference. Help!!! I would like to be able to set up my shares and my network work group.

The two I am complaining about: smb/cifs and samba both from the ubuntu software library. I'm not sure but I think it is samba4
