Hi!
To set things straight:Im absolute beginner with ubuntu, just happened to meet a comp with it and try to upgrade an old version to a new one. The user didnt know her password so it was not upgraded for a few years. I managed to learn how to recover the pass, but upgrading is out of my league: upgrade manager does not work, because the version is not supported anymore (grat stuff!). I learned I need some alternate CD method to do it on ubuntu pages, so I tried: downloading an ISO of a new version (tried with 10.04 and 11.10), typig all those commands remindig me those old days with basic and so on but nothing works. CD mechanics is not working so I need to do it mounted. If I type commands
mkdir /mnt/alternate
sudo mount -o loop /path/to/alternate-cd.iso /mnt/alternate
cd /mnt/alternate
gksudo ./cdromupgrade

I get an error message after the last command no matter what version i
try to instal. If 10.4, its the same one as in upgrade manager, if
11.10, something else, but it still does not work. Any idea, or should
I install Win, which didnt make me any harm for several years of using
em, smart guys?

The best solution is a fresh install. There is some advice in the thread in my signature.
