Hi,

I upgraded to 11.10 and now my videos (whether on youtube or using a media player) are skipping frames and/or audio.

Nothing has changed in terms of hardware. I know there were issues with the XFi Xtreme Audio Sound Blaster card before 11.04, but with 11.04 that was solved.

Does anyone know where to start?
Thankyou.

3246251196, has Ubuntu picked up the latest video driver for your hardware and have you loaded it? If you have, I would recommend uninstalling this driver, rebooting and reloading the same (latest) driver. This will probably solve the problem. If it doesn't then come back here.

I have the same problem with the creative card with 11.10

I have tried every possible way to work it out. incl. uninstall the video driver etc.

none of it worked.

My best guess is the Kernel 3.0 caused the issue. But I can't be sure.

Seeing as though Joni has uninst and reinst the drivers/device then I guess I will not put that as a priority. Though, I may eventually get around to trying just for the hell of it.

This particular card of ours has always been an issue with Linux. I am sure you have seen this before, but anyone with the SB Xtreme Audio should note:

Low profile card (half height), does not contain the EMU20K1 chipset used by the rest of the series. Is based on the same chipset as the Audigy SE, Audigy Value and SB Live! 24-bit. It also has Crystallizer and CMSS-3D. Also available for PCI Express (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PCI_Express) (using CA0110 chipset) and ExpressCard (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ExpressCard). Note, the CA0110 does not work on Linux with ALSA 1.0.23
The source is Wikipedia.

I feel that it takes the developers a little while to get around to fixing this particular device. This is no fault of their own and I appreciate people eventually sorting it out. I expect that there will be an upgrade which will correct this issue. Though, I am still questioning why it now does not work on 11.10 when it worked in 11.04. Like I say in http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1878921 if it's not broke, don't fix it.

EDIT: Also, I was never sure whether it was the sound blaster that was causing this video/audio skipping issue. I am still not 100% sure, but 99% sure due to Joni having the same issue who uses the same OS who uses the same card. Just to clarify further, mine is PCIe.
