Hi, this is my first post on the site, but anyways, I just installed Gnome 3 on 10.10 and I don't have a dash. I've seen other screen shots and videos which have a dash. Does this have to do with graphics? or are there any solutions?

Pretty sure that's about as much as you're going to get on 10.10.

It was never fully developed for 10.10.

I haven't ran gnome 3 on ubuntu I've only ran it on fedora 15 so a dash I'M just not sure what you're talking could you post a screen shot but I to think that is about all you're going to get out of 10.10 gnome 3 just wasn't made for 10.10.

Yes. your best bet is to install ubuntu 11.10. You can install gnome-shell from the regular repositories and it works quite well.

I've tried installing 11.10 but seeing as I'm on a MBP I can't even boot into the live cd.

Thats what i was thinking you were talking about. If i remember right the dash or launch bar on the left only comes out when you click on activities in the left side of the gnome 3 panel. If it doesn't show i would say there is something about 10.10.What type of video card do you have and have you installed the video driver?

Yeah, the only version of Shell available built for 10.10 is very old. It only doesn't look like the current one because it's not. = )

What's the issue with 11.10 on MacBook?

Well there's a lot of issues with 11.10 on MBP. The .iso won't even mount when you download it, it claims that there are no "mountable file systems." But When I burned the .iso onto a cd using ubuntu it worked fine. But when I try to boot into the live cd all I get it a flashing underscore. :/

Yeah, I have zero experience with Apple products, but I'm seeing that that's a common result of trying to boot from the CD. Strange, though, that the .iso won't mount on the OSX side - that part should be solvable, because people really have successfully installed 11.10 using Bootstrap. Of course, there will doubtless be other hassles in the process. I guess it's a question of whether or not it's worth the effort of the attempt - I mean, you could always go back to 10.10 if it doesn't work out.

The current Shell is really very cool, though, if that makes any difference. = /

Maybe this guide (http://www.ubuntubuzz.com/2011/06/install-ubuntu-1104-on-macbook-pro-81.html) can help you out a little? Apparently there's some issues with Ubuntu 11.04 which is good to know about when installing 11.10.

It was quite some time since I ran Linux on macintosh, but it's always the same in the sense if the Kernel image was made to work good or bad on different mac hardware.
