I've settled uon Gnome 3 under U11.10 after trying Unity.
The options offered under G3's System Settings are limited compared to
what is offered under U10.04's System > Preference.
I don't know, for instance, how to change colors on my Windows, how to add special effects, how to control the appearance of icons, and many other such customizations which I made using U10.04.
Please tell what to do to gain more control over my system. Is there something to download?
Many thanks and regards - Randy

If you would like to get back to a more familiar environment .

Gnome Shell:

Described in one of the links is the Gnome Tweak Tool / Advanced settings needed to change settings in Gnome or Unity . This application will allow the installation / use of shell extensions , installation of themes , and has other setting controls also . The color change option has been removed .

Thanks Frogs Hair, and greetings from an ex-Wisconsonian.

Numbering your urls 1 thruough 5, does the single command in 1 provide both the Indicator Applet and the Global menu provided by the commands in 2 but none of the special tweaks of 3, 4 ,5?

The first link installs the fallback gnome session (looks like classic ubuntu) which is included if you install the Gnome shell from the software center .

The second link has a PPA that will restore most of the panel functions that Gnome 2 had . I use Unity and the Gnome Shell , so I have not used the PPA .

Link 3 is a list of things you may want to do after installing 11. 10 and I found it very useful .

Link 4 and 5 are specific to the Gnome shell .

Installing the Gnome Tweak Tool / Advanced settings a must for installing and selecting themes among other things . You will need it regardless of what desktop you choose .

Packers 8 / 0 wonderful ! The locker room show was on in the background while typing this .
