View Full Version : [ubuntu] XP is not booting any more (no xp cd, SGD not working)

Hi, I'm really in trouble with my dual boot XP-Ubuntu 11.10.
I installed ubuntu after XP on the same hd. Windows was on three nfts partitions (C-D-E). Dual boot was working fine (XP was on dev/sda2). Then I tried to remove Ubuntu but I made some mess.
At the moment this is the situation.
Grub loader without xp, ubunt working fine.
I have used SGD. rescatux without success (probabily I have created more problems using these tools).
I need to restore xp using Linux. No chance to use xp recovery CD.
I think to have created problems with table partitions and mbr.

I'm very newbye. I have installed ms-sys but Im not sure how to use it. I yhink I have to write xp mbr, fixpartition tables and grub loader. But I don't know how to do.
Please help me step by step. At least I need to recover my data on XP.

are oyu saying you can't see the data in Ubuntu on windows partition? You shoudl be able to see it even if windows is not in grub.

windows XP repair CD is available at microsoft to download (i think it's somewhere here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994). you can use it to fixmrb and then you can update/restore grub using Ubuntu live CD. i don't know how to fix partition tables in Ubuntu but my guess is LiveCD and Gparted (found on liveCD) will do it.

If you deleted Win boot sector then only with a Win CD or with windows XP repair CD mentioned above, you can solve your problem.

It's best to have more detailed info about your system current status. Follow the link in my signature, download and run the bootinfoscript and post the result here. If copying the text from the results.txt file please put it in code tags as explained in that link (select the text and hit the # button in the toolbat above when creating the post).

The main issue is do you have your XP boot files present. I think not. Ubuntu can't discover them, so it doesn't report XP as a present OS.

Even if they are not there, it's fixable without the XP CD. I just don't have the link right now. There were instructions how to fix that with ubuntu cd and a link where to download the xp files.

I want to clarify that I can successfully boot Ubuntu. The problem is XP.

OK. Test 1:
1. Boot your ubuntu as normal.
2. Open /dev/sda1 partition. There should be a folder called grub there according to your results.
3. Move that folder from there, to your ubuntu Home folder for example.
4. Open terminal and run:
sudo update-grub

If you see that it reported XP as found, that's good. Reboot and try to boot both XP and ubuntu.

Let us know if it worked.

Thank you for your answer. These the results of test1.

Not sure when you say open /dev/sda1. I have mounted /dev/sda1 on a desktop folder, found grub folder and renamed it. (hope it was the right procedure!)

At reboot I found in grub list the voice Microsoft Windows XP Professional on /dev/sda1. I have selected it but then only dark screen without any message and no xp reboot.

OK, you are one step closer. Do you feel confident to do the following procedure to repair the boot sector of the partition? I think SGD messed it up. Ubuntu saw the XP boot files and reported it, but it doesn't boot, which is windows fault not ubuntu. The following is a copy of another thread, and be very careful to follow the instructions exactly when using testdisk, it's a very powerful tool.

Step 5: Rebuild the Boot sector of the Windows partition.

Install and run "testdisk:

sudo apt-get install testdisk
sudo testdisk /dev/sda



Press "enter" to "proceed"
Press "enter" to select "intel"
Use the "down arrow" and "enter" to select "advanced"
Use the down arrrow to select the "XP" partition and then "enter" to select "boot"
Use the "right arrow" key and "enter" to select "Rebuild BS"
This might take a while. Once done:
Use the "right arrow" key and "enter" to select "write". This will write a modified boot sector to the Windows partition.
Press q a few times to quit testdisk.

Reboot.

OK, the sectors were identical, nothing was changed so no write option. The last step is replacing the XP boot files with new ones in case they are corrupted. If that doesn't help, it doesn't look good. :)

First from ubuntu open again /dev/sda1 and change the names of your current boot files (don't delete them just in case). It's enough to add .original for example, it will be considered like a new extension and the files will be ignored by windows. The boot files are:
boot.ini
NTLDR
NTDETECT.COM

After you have renamed them, open this post and at the bottom there is a compressed archive with a new set of boot files. Download it, right-click on it and open with archive manager. Extract them where ever you want, in your Home for example. After they are extracted, they should be named the same as the three files you renamed. Copy them to /dev/sda1. Reboot and keep your fingers crossed.

But no good news. XP doesn't reboot. Dark screen.
In boot.ini I didn't changed anything. I left partition 1 because XP is on /dev/sda1

I have run again update-grab, but no results. Again testdisk.
I tried with grub-install and I got this error.

Installation finished. No error reported.
No chance to recover my XP :(

When I run gparted, dev/sda1 info gives some warnings.

A series of clusters (from 3250493 to 3250502) referenced multiple times (error 70). So file system check failed and suggests to run chkdsk from windows.

Can be this information useful?

Sorry to hear that. I don't know if this is a result of SGD, or something... But it seems the XP is broken.

You can always access all your data from ubuntu. You can even reinstall XP later if you choose to.

Yes, chkdsk might help but without XP CD to boot from into recovery console, I have no idea how to do a chkdsk. There was a similar tool in ubuntu, but don't remember it right now, and not sure it can help.

There are other options for restoring the MBR other than having the original XP CD !
Didn't mention what other Windows you may have had in the past, so not sure what
other means to restore XP you may have. Do you have a Windows '98 startup Disk?
Also not sure if you have the XP installation CD? Still more options, don't give up the
ship:)

This is not about restoring the MBR. Grub is very good at booting XP as long as the XP installation is good. In this case it seems it's not.
Could be related to the errors reported on the XP partition.

I'd like to provide you more information in order to try to solve my xp reboot.
Normal XP CD doesn't work and I cannot open recovery console probabily because my business laptop mounts a customised version of XP.

I have the original DVD used for the installation of this customised xp version and unfortunately it doesn'have any recovery tools.

This DVD has a .wim of C unity that will be copied for the installation of this XP version. I have tried to open the .wim image of C unity and I have copied all the files necessary for booting according to http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb457123.aspx table 29.1.

I have rebooted Ubuntu, mounted C unity and added all the files extracted from .wim image.
I have restarted the system but XP still doesn't reboot!

What else can I do? Which kind of permission should have these files?

I do not think the issue is the files, but the boot sector and/or file structure. You need to run fixboot & chkdsk. Only Windows can run chkdsk.

I have run chkdsk from a Windows 7 repairCD on my XP partition. It actually found more issues than the XP chkdsk. But it wrote a windows 7 boot sector, that still worked for some reason. I was able to write a XP boot sector from the Windows 7 repairCD.

We used to recommend Neosmart as they had a free download for the Windows repairs. They were offline for a while & I now see they want $10 for the download. So make one yourself before you have to pay to get one.
