TTY fades to black as if disabled.

So I'm in X - what-ever they call it these days.
I want to open up a TTY so I press ctrl + alt and a number.
I see the login, then I start logging in, but... strange, the screen is slowly fading to black.

I like TTY's what is going on here. :(
