What happens when you login to Gnome classic with & without effects?

Also, what video card are you using?

I've just decided to quit GNOME/Unity and use KDE, which has its quirks, but at least acts like a GUI for a computer should act, not one that would be great on a tablet or phone. Fortunately, I was able to install KDE from Synaptic, and I would advise you to do the same.

There are a couple extensions that will accomplish the same thing.

What is it doing?

I have the same issue. I've also remove the alternative-status-menu extension, and still have the same problem. I have to use unity (or gnome-fallback).

My machine is an asrock ion 3d 152b with ubuntu 11.10 amd64 up to date.

Gnome 3 worked well until the today upgrade.

If you are using 3rd party themes , some of themes can cause some strange behavior . Gnome 3 is new for all and not all the GTK themes at Gnome Look are tested with Ubuntu or updated regularly .
