Erm I take BIG issue with Soccer and/or rugby. being placed together, soccer fans in this country are mostly the morron scum (I did say mostly, I know some people enjoy it but you gotta admit the vast mass want to just mug you) where as rugby is a respectable sport that is totaly diffrent this is like putting skiball and tennis together just because they both have a ball in them.

As someone who likes rugby I really hate this poll for making such a nasty pairing.

why is american football listed as "football", and why are football and rugby lumped together while american footballl has its own entry (its only the americans who play american football)? everywhere else in the world except america, football and rugby are as seperate as football and ice hockey.
i voted for football (americans call it soccer. i'm beginning to really hate that word).

where's F1, rallying, dragster racing, and other motor sports? can't have a poll without them ;)

i love football, always have. participating in the same fantasy football league, with the same bunch of goofballs, for the past ten years, has just increased the enjoyment of it.

i love to play golf (7hdcp a few years ago), but i can't see why anyone who isn't a player would ever watch it.

ran track in high school and love to watch it. watching shawn crawford win gold in the 200m in the last olympics was a thing of beauty.

i love lifting weights, not that stupid booby-bui...i mean bodybuilding type crap, but real weight lifting: deadlift, full squat, clean&jerk, etc.

i joined an OT forum at an MMA site, not out of interest in the sport, but because they tend to have fewer posting rules. hanging around that crowd pushed my interest in boxing an k-1 to fanship of ufc and pride.

as both soccer and football are on the list, it seems obvious what is meant. i notice you're not asking "how come you listed football twice and who calls it soccer anyways?" besides, most of us yanks don't know what the rest of world calls our football. i'm guessing something like 'gridies' or 'bend, toss and scamper'?

Thank you for proving my original point, that attitude is alienating not just The Europeans here, but anyone who isn't American. Perhaps even putting "For Americans only" in the heading would help.

Including The World's most popular game (By a very Long Way!) in a poll as an afterthought on an international forum is insensitive at best.

i don't think the intent behind calling american football 'football' was to create an international incident. if a non-american were addressing an american and refered to soccer as 'football', i'm sure the same would be true. getting bent out of shape over this, imltho, is a bit silly.

The options should be called:
* Football (American)
* Football (Soccer)
* Rugby

Of course this can be slighty changed, eg "Football (Rugby)" or "American Football". However just picking one game as "Football" shows disrespect to all the others. Especially because the word "soccer" is basically frowned upon everywhere except in North America.

ridiculous. you don't see anyone whining "stop calling it 'american football'. it's just 'football'!", do you? there's no insult in an american using american terminology. the only risk is being misunderstood and that was taken care of by including both 'football' and 'soccer'. calling restoftheworldfootball, 'soccer', is no more of an insult than calling baseball, 'rounders'.

No Fucsia, only ridiculous if you are not the offended/disrespected/insulted. Look at the replies, it's not just me. It's not just one or two, it's almost all non-American replies. Ask them if they think it's ridiculous.

You sound like the guy who couldn't understand why his work colleagues don't like being called "Chicks" (After all, it's harmless!).

Or The old man I once met in Atlanta who used the "N-word" in everyday conversation and couldn't begin to comprehend why people found it insulting; ("I've been using it all my life")

Not that I'm suggesting in any way that you would do those things, I'm just using those examples to illustrate the point that if a bunch of people find something disrespectful, one of the hardest things to do is to get the perpertrator (For want of a better word!) to see it from their viewpoint.

Not a big deal unless you're on an International Forum where visitors from every corner of the globe come to seek advice/help/fun. If several mention that they find something disrespectful then it usually is.

No matter how you see it.

i think of a sport as a game that requires use of one's athletic ability (regardless of how much or little one might have). i guess you could argue that the delicate feel required for billiards is an athletic ability (cards and chess wouldn't qualify. they're games), but i think of that as more of a skill than an athletic ability. i've often been in discussions as to whether or not golf is a sport. ultimately, i guess it depends on how hard you swing.

many of the football thugs are lawyers and barristers by day. i think the rugby quote came about because of its (popularised) origin at rugby public school. rumour has it that rugby was first played by the ancient chinese.

Example of useless is american footbal (nothing personal people:) exactly. there are SIGNIFICANTLY more people in the world who are interested in F1 than american football.....not to mention all the other motor sports. it just seems so illogical that american football should be listed as the 3rd option when there are so very few people in the world who are even remotely interested in it. i was led to believe that ubuntuforums was global.

According to FIFA 1.1 Billion people worldwide watched the last World Cup Final, over ten times the number of the last Superbowl (95 Million).

the original question was "what are your favorite sports?" despite the obvious flaw in asking about sports (plural) in a poll format in which one can only make one choice, i think the intent of the question was clear.

You gotta know the rules. Once you know them you have more of a chance of enjoying it.

It's like Ice Hockey in South Africa. When they opened up a rink in Cape Town it was a case of Huh?

Yeah, I suppose there are similarities in that they're both "free-flowing" games, with passing, shooting and goals at either end. After that though it starts to get a little complicated. I wouldn't begin to know how to describe it to someone who doesn't watch it, it'd probably take quite a while.

Yes Fuscia they are similar in a fashion. As OpenMind has stated they are both free-flowing games and are fast and intense.

Any sport can be enjoyed if one puts ones mind to it, and it should never be a case of "us vs them"

it seems there is a similarity in soccer, hockey, lacrosse and even basketball, in that there are nets, front lines, defensive lines and goalies (no goalies in basketball, though). are there also offsides rules in soccer? is that box around the front of a soccer goal like the crease in hockey? is rugby at all similar? or, is rugby more similar to american football (in the same way that mars is closer to earth than uranus)?

1.Rugby Union
2.Cricket

The thought of the next couple of weeks of seeing footballers (soccer players outside Europe) rolling around on the floor crying and kissing each other while moronic fans cause riots makes me shudder. I was beginning to gain some respect for Football over the years the finals have been held in Cardiff. Then they let the Leeds lot down there on the last day and they all started fights with the Munster RU fans.

All of this is of course outside of hearing 1966 mentioned at least 5 times every minute.

Rugby is far more similar (excuse the bad grammar!) to (American!;)) Football, but without the forward pass. If I remember correctly, Rugby entering North America via Canada was the precursor to Football as the US knows it today.

Seeing as Soccer was being played when Rugby was "invented", then Soccer is American Football's Grandaddy!!:-D

So it's all just a family spat!:)

Actually Rugby is older than Football (Soccer) by about 10 years. Both games formed around the same time when generic football at the time was split with Eton and Rugby public schools having a disagreement on whether the focus should be playing with your feet or hands. The first Rugby club is older than the first Football club and the first Rugby international was played before the first Football international.

It's a common misconception that Rugby was an offshot of Football. It certainly was an offshot of the older football game where just about anything went but Football and Rugby were both offshots of this game.

Anyway just thought I'd clear that up.

15 players a team seperated into 8 forwards and 7 backs. The forwards are the guys who do all the physical stuff and actually win the game.

The backs are reknown for putting their hands in their pockets and for readjusting their hair while the forwards are taking the next crucial step to winning the game.

Essentially the forwards domain is controlling posession. They provide both quantity and quality of ball for the backs to use. When the backs do get the ball and manage not to drop it their job is to cut the opposing defence and put points on the board.

You can probably guess where I played from my description  .

So that old story I learned as a kid ain't true? Say it ain't so!!

Some kids at Rugby school were playing Football and one of them (Webb Ellis?) decided to pick it up and run with it? All Lies? Noooooo!!

Next you'll be telling me that Santa isn't real either.

Ps. I bet your first name is Gareth!

G Morgan

Yep, one of the most common names in Wales given our national sport and Edwards prowess at 9.

Webb Ellis did exist (indeed the RWC trophy is named after him) but he was the captain of the Rugby schools team and helped them construct the rules of the game. The urban myth exists because of the confusion between Football the historic game* and Football as it was after Eton setup the rules for modern Football.

*which began as a sport which was basically no holds barred and the objective was to get the ball back to your home town (obviously 2 towns competed) in a capture the flagesque way. Eventually the game was moved onto a pitch (it'd be a bit hard to play London vs Manchester given the distance) and several scores were allowed rather than 1 score ends the game. At this point the games parted ways.

i was gonna have a go at explaining the offside rule but I couldn't be arsed, so here ya go:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Offside_law_(football)

(note the classification my american chums!)

:p:D:mrgreen:

i suppose it might have been helpful to have done this earlier, but while i was in wikipedia, i looked up 'football'. - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Football
it seems they are all related, more or less. there is also the explanation that the term 'football' comes from being played on foot (as opposed to 'on horse') rather than with foot. to do the poll correctly, we'd need seperate catagories for each: american football, association football, australian rules football (sometimes known as 'helpful hints & suggestions football', i'm guessing), canadian football (and there could be an argument made for college football being considered seperately, i suppose) etc. but, that would have spoiled one of sport's main functions in civilization: an outlet for stupid arguments that have little effect on one's real life.

Rugby is far more similar (excuse the bad grammar!) to (American!;)) Football, but without the forward pass. In rugby, the guy with the ball runs forwards and throws it backwards.
In American football, the guy with the ball runs backwards and throws it forwards.
Meanwhile the rest of the players line up, run into each other and fall over.

AFAIK, In rugby you can only tackle the guy who actually has the ball. Also, one can only pass backwards, so when one guy is running with the ball, the rest of the team run alongside but behind him, at about 4 or 8 o'clock IYKWIM.

Then, just as he's about to get trampled by the other team, he'll throw it to another member of his own team (alongside but behind) to continue getting the ball to the other end.

Once there, the ball must be touched to the ground (not dropped) while the player is still holding it. That's a touchdown.

<spittingoutbait>i thought 'rounders' were some kind of dry toast cracker.</spittingoutbait> find out all about rounders and baseball from here:

Rounders is a sport (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sport) which originated in the United Kingdom (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Kingdom). A team consists of a maximum of 15 players and a minimum of 6 of whom no more than 9 may be on the field at one time. [1] (http://www.nra-rounders.co.uk/rules.html) The teams try to score points ("rounders") by completing a circuit "'round" the posts. The sport is very old and it has been documented as early as the seventeenth century. Baseball (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baseball) (both the "New York game (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knickerbocker_Rules)" and the now-defunct "Massachusetts game (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Town_ball)") as well as softball (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Softball) evolved from rounders (see origins of baseball (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Origins_of_baseball)); the earliest literary mention of rounders calls the game "base-ball". Rounders is now played on all levels from school level to international (in and around England)
