Buying a Asus eee pc x101h

Did a bit of research and found kde-plasma(Visuals Seems good -- http://kde.org/workspaces/plasmanetbook/ ) and fuduntu(claim best performance ,battery usage and latest kernel )

So far,i seem to like these two.My other options were eeebuntu,Ubuntu netbook Remix, Kubuntu netbook remix..

Wondering which one to choose.Have ubuntu on my desktop and wanted some change(as to installing Ubuntu netbook remix). So,downloaded both plasmaNetbook and fuduntu -- wanted to know which is the best performance/development(web development) wise ??

If there are any that i've missed out on,plz do mention..

Wanted an expert opinion

"Netbooks" are nothing more or less than very small versions of computers. Any recent Linux distro will have excellent support for netbooks. You do not need a specific distro with "netbook" in the name.

I have two netbooks (an older ASUS EEE 900ha and a Dell Mini 9) and have tried dozens of distros on them. I won't tell you which distro I'm using now (because I'll probably try something new next week) but I will tell you that every single one I've tried has worked.

Since you mention you like KDE, Kubuntu 11.10 would be a good choice for you I think. If you want a little better performance you can experiment with lightweight desktop environments like Xfce (Xubuntu) or LXDE (Lubuntu).

However a quick Google search shows me the model you're interested in has just come on the market. Unless you are in a hurry I recommend you wait a little while and then use the forum Search feature. Usually within a month or two of an new product becoming available, you can read about other members' experience and possibly save yourself some aggravation.

Good luck! :)

ps I've not tried Fuduntu but I hear good things. Best thing you can do is burn a few Live CDs or USBs and take them all for a test drive.

well,i've used xfse and lxde myself on my desktop.Since feduntu and plasma were customized for netbooks(to adjust the OS for the smaller screen) -- thought that ppl might have used it and might have a heads up 4 me..

well,as u say -- i'll check em out myself. And,i've already bought it(got it as a gift).. so,i'll be the 1 who'll be posting my experiences.. instead of waiting for others.. :) .. anyhow, thank you for ur comment..

Great timing for this thread - thanks.

I have Ubuntu 11.10 on my desktop (AMD64), and fell out of love with Unity. I have tried Enlightenment (but found it to be too immature for my use), and am now hooked on KDE. My question is what to do with my two laptops (one very old, one a bit newer) - do I put on Ubuntu with the KDE front end, or just hit them with Kubuntu.

The snag is that I don't fully understand what I am choosing between; what is the difference between Ubuntu with KDE and Kubuntu?

All the best with your choice. Let us know what you come up with. FWIW, I tried Puppy Linux a couple of weeks ago and was pleasantly surprised; it's much better than it has any right to be, given it's size.

Oli.

to zcacogp: I've tried many linux distros including kubuntu, open suse and more... and I have to tell you that - as for the best kde experience I had - Chakra linux bit them all so I'd recommend you give it a try...

i've got plain old Ubuntu 11.10 on my HP mini 110. I installed from the regular (unity) live cd, but quickly installed "lubuntu-desktop" ... LXDE is awesome! really fast, configurable, even pretty. i can even run cairo-compmgr for transparent menus and window decorations (with a cpu load average of around .01)! also with the small screen of a netbook, it's nice to have just the one panel.
Lubuntu - LXDE - love it, love it!
happy new year

I dont really use my netbook for performance, but for comfort (check thumbnail for my 11.10 looking and feeling like 10.04). Modern laptops can go for quite a long time with compiz effects and stuff.. But looking at my cpu-graph applet, i can tell the 11.10 is pretty much idle all the time with exceptions of doing some stuff when i really do some stuff.

I also have my system installed on a pendrive instead of on hdd, for comfort of being hardware-independent :)

That said, there is one caveat about 11.10. It comes by default with unity, which i found rather awkward. Restoring 10.04 look and feel is possible, including wobbly windows, but requires a bit of work, which i explained here http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1903363 (http://http//ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1903363)

XUBUNTU 12.04 DAILY CD FOR INSTALLATION,

http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/daily-live/

when You Install OS, than :

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats

I had to install ATI drivers for myfreind netbook (from synaptic).

A since than is working ok.

Was poor performance on movies and bit slow with ubuntu 10.04, so go for
latest XUbuntu, and is much bater than linux mint 12 or latest Sabayon
(ATI HD 3200 was poor performance on other 64 bit distro and could't install them right)

netbook is MSI U230.

It works for my freind as movie player with any movie format on big screen through HDMI, even some HD move are fine now.

I installed 386 version Xubuntu instead 64 bit becouse I was aware about performance on multimedia, other distros what I was tryed were 64 bit, and latest I am testing is 32 bit XUbuntu, IMHO LXDE is bit simple for daily use as Desktop. I like gnome 2.30.2

Freind has great movie player now. And he is happy.
