my pc is fully taken with pclinuxos, on one partition. I want to dual boot with ubuntu or mint

do I need to use something like gparted live cd to split the partition, or can I trust the ubuntu / linux mint DVD installer to find me existing OS and do this for me ? how safe is this ? Dont want to mess up my existing os

Thanks

I would use GParted from a live CD/DVD to shrink the partition and then add new partitions for other distros. Back up everything first, though.
