can 11.10 get installed from update manager?

It is possible to run the upgrade to 11.10 (although your not checking for update for the last 192 days may hurt the upgrade process).

I have the best success using a separate '/home' partition, and then doing a clean install of Ubuntu in the '/' (root) partition, while leaving my data in the '/home' partition.

But the choice is yours...

update now there's no harm unless you disrupt the update process.

i installed 11.04 in a few weeks ago.

But it seems that you never updated after installation, so the 192 days might be the time since your 11.04 installation image was built.

Before you try to upgrade: MAKE A BACKUP!

Best option would be to clone the drive or the Ubuntu partition(s) with Clonezilla. If something goes FUBAR, recovery is a matter of minutes, rather than hours...
