I would like to change the displayed name of the keyboard layout indicator — for example, right now mine displays codes like «en, ru, uk» which does not look nice on the panel. In the latest editions of Ubuntu the full name of the user is displayed to the right and I think it would be very fitting if the full names of the languages would be displayed as well.

Can I edit some kind of a configuration file and make it read English, Russian or Ukrainian?

I have come across this (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=3507927) solution to the similar problem, but it is not applicable to my system — the configuration file I am supposed to edit is absent.

Thanks for the response.

I have found this (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1035935) thread, but changing text in the field shortDescroption in the file /usr/share/X11/xkb/rules/xorg.xml for corresponding languages and logging in/out did not seem to work for me.

Anyone?
