running Ubuntu 11.04, recently installed xubuntu-desktop to avoid unity. Using the "Human" theme right now (if that makes any difference)

I've got a panel on top and on bottom to emulate the way gnome 2 classic looked. And it's working pretty well so far. BUT, I'm experiencing a strange glitch.

Whenever I open a terminal, the left two thirds of my top panel goes black. Everything up to the notification area. If I run my cursor over the panel, all of the icons will reappear, but the "spacers" remain black.

It only happens when I open a terminal. I'm Just using the standard xubuntu launcher:
exo-open --launch TerminalEmulator

any clue whats going on here?

(If I right click on the panel and select panel preferences, the black in the separators goes away and the panel goes back to normal)
