Anybody know how to get rid of the new activity thing up in the right corner of the desktop?

Don't think you can...

However, if you unlock widgets, you are then able to drag it to the extreme top right, where upon it turns into a far less intrusive quarter circle icon.

Since my post yesterday I have found some discussion of this on the kde mailing list from back in May 2011, archived here:

The thread, however, seems to quickly drift off-topic.

It seems that it is designed as an integral part of the plasma desktop and can't be removed.
