I have a favorite screensaver called GLCells. Is it possible to open up the file itself and change its parameters? It would also be great if I could capture some of the generated images to use as png files for artistic purposes. Can that be done? It's a screensaver that produces body cells that multiply and change colors.

I did a little more research and if my understanding is correct, the Xscreensaver program has been supplanted by gnome-screensaver. I'm only guessing that they are very similar but I'd need some way to either get into the guts of gnome-screensaver or revert to xscreensaver. Found some interesting pages but I'm at a loss at what to do next with it.

Here is the site for GlCells

Here's the page which goes into some of the options for the gnome-screensaver.

I can't make heads or tails of most of it so maybe someone else here can figure out how I can get into it to modify or pull data/images from the GLCells hack. Oh, yes, it too is referred to as a "hack" of the xscreensaver app.
