One of the only reasons I continued to use Windows on my netbook was because my main use of it was to take notes, and MS OneNote is a great tool for that. The closest alternatives I could ever find were Tomboy and basKet, neither of which quite cut it.

Now, someone has created Nixnote, a Ubuntu port of Evernote (a Mac application). It's really quite good, and has allowed me to finally switch my netbook to Ubuntu.

The app is available here, and seems to work very well with Ubuntu 11.10: https://launchpad.net/~vincent-c/+archive/nevernote

I might give this a try. I use OneNote all the time at work, and I really like it.

At home I use Zim Notes, which doesn't have all the features of OneNote, but it does give me the hierarchical structer of notes that I want, which is all I really use OneNote for anyways. It is also pretty light compared to something like OneNote.

I use Sticky Notes which, I believe, I got through Synaptics. It's very light-weight (kinda like sticking Post-Its to my monitor) but that's cool by me.

Does the program support screen grabs or is it only text based notes?

I installed this and checking it out - seems pretty good but I have not found out how to paste any screen clips or grab pictures to insert.

Hm, I might give Zim Notes a try, too. Looks similar to Tomboy except with a few more features...

The closest you can get to onenote in linux is basket. It's a KDE app though.

Which is a really nice application, but just a bit overkill for me. It also brings in a lot of KDE dependencies which I don't want (I use Xfce).

I tried basKet, but just found it was lacking some necessary features--notably, indentation/sub-bullet points. Plus, there's all the KDE dependency junk that takes up space, being an Xfce user.

Looks nice, might try it, with the directory in dropbox folder.

I currently use a minimal text note taking ploy

I tried the nixnote - pretty good interface but I had problem - could not get images to attach to the notes - if you have any better luck with it please let me know.

Have you looked at Nevernote?

This from their website:
"This is an open source clone of Evernote. This program has been run on Linux, Windows, and OS-X, but the primary goal is to proved a Linux client. While this is designed to work with Evernote, it is in no way connected with or supported by Evernote. ..... People have used this with both 64 & 32 bit versions of Linux as well as OpenJDK & Sun's Java and (so far) have not encountered any problems with these different environments."

Alas, I could not insert an image in a note either. Coupled with the use of a binary database to store notes, I think I'll give this program time to mature.

CherryTree allows images in notes and rich text but has what I see as an advantage: it stores everything in an xml file which means data can (in principle) be extracted at any time in the future on any platform where xml files can be read.

At the moment, I'll stick to nano running in a terminal with the simple .bashrc function I linked to earlier.

I use gedit and a "notes" folder for quick messages.

For longer notes (like from school), I type them up in Abiword/vim. I like creating study guides for myself.

Could make a good Web site if you tidy them up. My site started as somewhere I put handouts I used in teaching...

Thanks for that info, and to others who also pointed this out.
