This is really weired. When I run the command

sudo /etc/init.d/networking stop
my screen changes its appearance. The following happens,

All the terminal windows gets dimmed
All interfaces become more Java like, you know what I mean
I loose the System Settings wheel
The networking-manager icon disappears
I can not logout

Things get corrected after reboot, which I have to do from command line.

I faced this while debugging another problem (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1873116). I am not sure whether the issues are related.

Any suggestion will be appreciated.
