The one I've got is about ready to kick the bucket and I'm thinking I'll be better off just getting a new one. Naturally I want one that already runs Linux. I was wondering if someone could recommend one that's in the $1,000 or less range?

If you wish to use Ubuntu and support it, make it a System 76.

I am also planning to buy a new laptop.

System76 (http://www.system76.com/), which is a Ubuntu dedicated vendor looks like a great option.

Hello Elfwood1,

Although it is nice to buy something brand new, consider also getting a used computer, that can do what you need!

Have fun finding out how to use Ubuntu :-)

What do you want to use it for? Do you need decent graphics? What size?

I agree it really depends on what you are planning to use it for...
I've got an old Compaq v5000 that works pretty good for me... But I'm not doing anything too graphics intensive with it..

ZaReason is also a good option. I don't have personal experience with them but I've heard lots of good things. They are also offer other distros besides Ubuntu.

I recently got a System76 machine. I wanted a Linux compatible machine and I definitely didn't want to pay MS tax (I don't care if the price of Windows is offset by crapware that comes pre-loaded on Windows machines, I believe in free market economy and having windows pre-installed is an absolute violation of that).

What I find strange is that ZaReason is somewhat expensive. I also considered a custom build machine without OS or with Linux and no support (i.e. http://www.avadirect.com/Notebooks). I ended up with System 76 and I am pretty happy about it, I get both support and reasonable price and great hardware.

When it comes to Linux graphics for Laptops, this thread that I started gives everything that I can say about it:

Decent graphics would be good but aren't priority. Mostly I need something that won't kank out on me anytime I try to do something moderately processor-extensive, the way my current laptop does. (Is kank a word?) I'm taking a look at System 76 to see what's available; hopefully I'll find something..

Have 3 Toshiba laptops now and all have the intel chip. All worked right out of the box. :)

FWIIW, I just bought a Lenovo Z470 for my wife and almost everything works purrfectly. The exception being the soft keys above the keyboard for volume control - if I touch those, the volume control applet goes nuts, but the normal keyboard volume control buttons work correctly.
