View Full Version : [ubuntu] Samsung R510 stops while booting

Hi,

I have a Samsung R510 Laptop.
Hardware:
Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T5800, 2GHz, 4096 MB RAM
Chipset: Intel PM45+ICH9M
Graphic: NVIDIA Geforce 9200 GS
Audio: Intel HD Audio Codec, Realtek ALC262-V2GR

I tried to install Ubuntu 11.10 (32bit) on a 32Gb USB Stick, but I had some problems while booting from USB-Stick. When I boot the PC, my Laptop stops while boot process. First, I create a Live-CD then boor from CD and klck "install Ubuntu". The bootloader is installed on the USB-Stick. 3 Partitions are made: The first (10GB, ext4) for Linux, the second about 8GB for SWAP and the third (about 10GB, Fat32) for general use. Installation works fine, I also download the updates while installing. The Live-CD (2bit) works fine....

I read about some problems with more than 3 GB of RAM and my system has 4GB. But I have found no solutions. I tried to install Lubuntu 11.10 (32bit) with the same effects and Ubuntu 11.10 (64bit) but then the PC restarts continiously...

I had the same/similar problems with the Samsung R510, model: NP-R510-FS0ANL. (The last 2 letters of the model only identify the country you bought it in, like DE/NL/etc. so it is actually a NP-R510-FS0A)

I tried all the option under F6, (ACPI = off, etc), I tried different versions like Ubuntu 11.10/12.04 CD and DVD versions, both amd64 and i386... but every time the laptop would reboot right after selecting "Install Ubuntu", or trying to boot the live CD of Ubuntu.

Here the fix:

Simply download the BIOS Update from the samsung website and install it via a windows live CD, after that everything works with no more unexpected reboots. :)

I ended up installing Ubuntu 12.04 DVD for 64bit, so not sure if this will work for older/other versions.
