Sometimes when reading forums related to Open-source topics, I can't help but remember some of the proverbs that were feds to us as little kids. So, I thought I'd compile a list of things that a few amongst us might need to be "force-fed" again. So, is my personal list of things we seem to have forgotten growing up:

1. If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all.
2. Be polite... ((Actually there's a gazillion different ones, but that's what they all come down to. ))
3. Look before you leap. (Or, to put it in a more relevant form: "Rant AFTER you understand what the devs are working towards." And don't forget 1. & 2.)
4. Don't use fighting words.
5. What do you say when someone gives you something? (For free...)
6. Go to bed! (( I'm particularly guilty of this one... Hehe.))

So, that was my list. If you guys have any others, post them below.

1: I want NEVER gets (you would LIKE)
2: When we have done our best we shall do a little better
3: Tomorrow never comes
4: New world in the morning (no use crying over spilt milk)
5 The sooner you start, the sooner it'll get finished (homework)
6: Everytime you talk you miss a bite (told whilst at the dinner table)
7: A shag turned down is a shag lost forever
8: Being "in the right" wont bring you back from the dead (VERY TRUE driving tip)
9: There's no such word as "Can't"... You can always try !!

Politeness costs you nothing, rudeness can cost you a lot....
If you eat with your mouth open, you spill a lot of food.
Cleanliness is pleasant, dirtiness is dangerous.
Be nice to the people you meet on the way up, you never know who you'll meet on the way back down.

that's a cool one

my thing to add is not really a proverb, but more a strategy for dealing with little brats who want attention: just ignore them and they'll eventually get bored. for example, on here, if someone posts something that is blatantly immature and threatens to derail the whole thread by starting some off-topic flame war, then just ignore it. don't even acknowledge that person.

Yeah, but the problem with that arises when people forget the difference between attention seekers and people who feel hurt. Those are two different situations which require two different approaches that most people often get confused.

I've actually been thinking about this lately. I would have to say, growing up, the number one thing we forget, is how to feel. We're taught growing up to do unto others as we would have done unto ourselves, but somewhere along the line we forget what it feels like to be "others" and we assume that the laws which we choose for ourselves, must also apply to those others.

so mine is:

"Do unto others as you would have done unto yourself."

People from every philosophy in life have used this phrase. It doesn't say to just let people run over you, or to let them do as they will, it says to acknowledge what you're saying and doing and how your actions are influencing those around you.

Keep your old love letters, throw away your old bank statements

The most interesting people
I know didn't know at 22 what they wanted to do with their lives
Some of the most interesting 40-year-olds I know still don't
Get plenty of calcium, be kind to your knees
You'll miss them when they're gone

Maybe you'll marry, maybe you won't
Maybe you'll have children, maybe you won't
Maybe you'll divorce at 40, maybe you'll dance the 'Funky Chicken'
On your 75th wedding anniversary
Whatever you do, don't congratulate yourself too much
Or berate yourself either
Your choices are half chance, so are everybody else's

Enjoy your body, use it every way you can
Don't be afraid of it or what other people think of it
It's the greatest instrument you'll ever own, dance
Even if you have nowhere to do it but your own living room
Read the directions even if you don't follow them
Do not read beauty magazines, they will only make you feel ugly

Get to know your parents, you never know when they'll be gone for good Be nice to your siblings, they're your best link to your past
And the people most likely to stick with you in the future

Understand that friends come and go
But a precious few, who should hold on

Work hard to bridge the gaps in geography and lifestyle
For as the older you get, the more you need the people
You knew when you were young

Accept certain inalienable truths

From the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts
