ROTFLMBO. I however have a life. (In my dreams mostly filled with things I've done for the computer community.) ah well, time to wake up and smell reality again. . .

My wife hates computers, she won't even touch one. But she is always asking me to do things for her and lookup stuff. She just asked me to look up what time the Wisconsin Badger's are playing and where and what channel they are on.
Then she tells me I am addicted to computers. She said it is like a drug to me. I tell her not so, but there is some truth in this.
What did we do before we had computers?

What did we do before we had computers? Many of us were told we sat too much and watched t.v.-"Glued to the boob tube", I kept hearing.

When computers first came out in the 80's it seemed only teens used them for the most part. The rest of us came on board later. I wonder why that is...

ha!
i try to keep trivial use of the internet to my sleeping hours (oh, that's right, i used to sleep at night).
but sure, i seem to be connected more or less continuously.

on a related note, apparently lcd screens emit light containing similar frequencies (blue) to daylight and disrupt therefore disrupt sleep patterns.

The first popular mass produced computer, the Apple II, came out in 1977.

My daughter move yesterday, and she is getting her Internet hooked up on Wednesday and today is Saturday. She said to me, "How am I going to go without my Computer and Internet until then?"
I fixed that for her, I went over and hooked up her computer and got on the Internet through a neighbor's connection until she get hers on Wednesday.

There were these stacks of paper with glue around one edge and a heavier paper or board to hold them together. They had pictures and writing on them.
We would look at them for hours and hours.

I even remember looking at one with a flashlight in one hand and the blankets of the bed over my head so my mother would not catch me with one when I was supposed to be sleeping.

You need to spend some time on research! Had my first box in the 70's utilizing an 8086 processor. It was used for BUSINESS .. not kid's games. MOST kids could, in no way, be able to afford the 2-3 grand it cost for computer set ups in the early years. Business, on the other hand, could. Simply because the tax man let us write them off over 3 years!! It became an integral tool in our office.

Of course, he got the time frame for "first computers" totally wrong.

The first (electronic) computers took up whole buildings.

You guy and gals are all wrong. the first computer came out in 1936 two years before I was born. It was the Z1 computer.

Were all misunderstanding here.

1. Person makes a post that computers hit "the scene" in the 80's. This is wrong.

2. Second person tells them to do their research, and that kids didn't use early computers.

3. I post a link to a wiki article on the commodore 64 noting that in the time period poster 1 speaks about computers were accessible to teens.

4. You post a link to the "first" computer, which has nothing to do with my post. I never specified a date to be incorrect about.

But of course, I know where the second foundation REALLY is.

True.

I bought a commadore64, just to play, some of the coolest games, from that era.

irv

Before we even considered buy a computer we had a early game machine (a Philco) I believe and the kids and I played "Pong". Anyone of Age must remember that era.
I guess we are off track, this thread was about all the time we spend on computers and that we should turn the power off once in awhile and get a life. Like I should be doing right now.

And just for the record, I started out with a Tandy and a Atari XL800 with a B/W TV and tape drive. Also had a Main Frame at work.

Those were the days!

I just realized something; This month will make 6 years since I have been on this forum. Boy does time fly. So I must of started using Ubuntu at version 5.04 or 5.10. So I must go back to

Hoary Hedgehog or

Breezy Badger.

Those were the good old days. LOL

Yes I know. I read about the 5 years support. Also I plan on Bug finding 12.04 starting in December when the beta is released.

That article covers American computing innovation and achievement.

Of course, history is not so simple:

What did we do before we had computers?

For a couple of days ago i had to change cell company. And i was without my phone (no subscription). And communicating with others became extremely difficult.

#1 Pay Phones are all but extinct here.
#2 My phone was also my watch!!
#3 My GPS!! The horror!

What did people do before mobile phones O.o?!

Argh yes

I am about the same. I think there might be a few that I go 12 or so.
I also spend a quite deal on it. But 9hours of those are work so i don't think they count :p :D :) ?
