View Full Version : [ubuntu] Themes will not install/work

I'm very new to Ubuntu, hoping on board with this recent 11.10 version. I've been able to do quite a few things with the handy tutorials here, such as fix my wireless issue, add things back to the menu, install restricted codecs, etc.

However, installing themes into GNOME 3.2 is not one of them. I've been trying everything I can think of to get this working, trying every tutorial with no avail. In fact, I've made my desktop even worse in the process. I know have what looks like two bars at the top, laying on top of each other. I've prepared some pictures below for reference.

The first thing I did was install gnome tweak tool. Obvious. Then, after installing some items from here --http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2011/10/how-to-install-gnome-shell-themes-in-ubuntu-11-10/
I went and followed the instructions. It worked like it should, but I still needed to change my window and GTK theme items. Somewhere along the way, I downloaded and installed a different Icon pack.

I followed these instructions, and tried it various times with various themes from various sources. --http://www.techdrivein.com/2011/09/top-10-gnome-shell-themes.html
I was able to place the folder in gnome-shell and in themes only after booting into gksudo nautilus, which was a fun hour wasted to find out. After doing this, I still couldn't select any window or gtk themes from the tweak tool. I tried to install dconf editor, but following instructions for that didn't work either.

My desktop is ugly as hell right now, and driving me insane. The fact that fixing my wireless adapter was easier than installing a new theme concerns me, and I have no idea where to go from here.

ALSO: If it's relevant, I installed ubuntu 11.10 by installing Wubi on windows, then transferring it to a ext4 partition.
