This is pretty much a pointless topic but it might help someone someday :)

Today, the internal pata drive of a laptop I use as my music server / music set failed. Basically, on boot, the laptop displays a weird error that goes something like "!!!toshiba!!mk1136gas!!!!!!!" and just stops, saying that accessing the drive failed miserably.

Instead of doing any kind of diagnostics (too lazy and a bit frustrated: this is the second drive that failed with this setup), I simply removed the drive and hooked it to a usb port using an external closure. Hit the power button and voila, the laptop now boots (slowly but who cares) from the now-usb-drive without me having to change any configuration files on ubuntu.

I wonder when this one's gonna give up on me.

Sounds like a PATA controller failure.

Sounds like a PATA controller feature.

Yes it does.
