appearance

I upgraded to Ubuntu 10.11 and I have a menu-bar that appears and disappears on the left.
In previous versions I had found (but I don't remember) where to make the change to have the classic desktop version (i.e. menu on the top-left, workspaces on the bottom-right)
I can't find that here. Could please somebody help? I'm not expert. Thanks.
