A bit of fun for The Cafe today courtesy of the BBC.

The link below calculates how many people were alive when you were born, and how many people had been born before you in all of history.

It's obviously a very rough value given that accurate record keeping is a fairly new thing even in the developed world, and it only asks for your date of birth and not the time of birth.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-15391515

When you were born, you were the:
4,663,718,385th
person alive on Earth
79,378,718,070th
person to have lived since history began

I'm number 2,734,042,598 on the planet when i was born.

And number 76,099,292,470 to have lived since human life began. Does that just mean homo sapiens or does it include the humans too?

Did you check out the country tab, it tells you how many people are born, die and immigrate... doesn't tell you how many people emigrate though!

When you were born, you were the:
3,728,330,581st person alive on Earth

77,883,554,414th person to have lived since history began.

I think it is time to start colonizing the planets around us!

There was a neat article that talked about old lava tunnels on the moon where it can house part of a colony and protect it from cosmic rays and the like.

Apparently I'm the 3,057,254,563rd person. One wonders what assumptions were made in coming up with that number.

That means you're 671,076,018 people older than me! Wow, you're old!

Both numbers have been calculated using UN Population Division figures. The first is an estimate of how many people were alive on your date of birth. It is one possible value based on global population figures and estimates of growth rates over time. Data before 1950 is less accurate than figures after that date. The second number includes calculations based on the methodology of scholar Carl Haub, who estimated how many people had been alive since 50,000 B.C. His calculation has been amended by the UN to include additional points in time.

Missed this bit earlier

When you were born, you were the:

I'm ~3.75 billion. Wow, I'm over a billion older than some of you... so I feel old now, thanks. :p

In one of the articles that linked to that page when I was reading it yesterday had a quote from the UN saying that unless trends change, we will need the equivalent of 2 earths to feed the human population by 2033. Some very interesting decades are coming up very shortly.

The interesting bit is that you can just make out the rate of increase tailing off at the top of the graph. We're living through an unprecedented period of growth, and one that possibly will never be seen again.

Maybe you're not that young, but there are a handful of us here on the forum that are "old" by comparison.

Don't tell Mrs Lisati, but sometimes I have to remind myself to behave around young ladies young enough to be my granddaughter. :D

A BBC masterclass in irrevelency.

I do like the BBC though. Top draw when it comes to popular science.

I hope i won't offend any Americans when i say; i have just watched an American documentary on string theory and i thought i was at the pictures (movies).

T'was a good documentary though; just too many adverts at the start and too long an explanation of what was going to be discussed during the documentary.

EDIT: Crikey. You guys are big on adverts.

(apparently there are several different babies claiming the title).
