I was recently watching an episode of Star Trek Voyager called, Future's End. All about time travel.

Well, it appears that someone went back in time...or to the future...or some other such paradoxical weirdness to come up with the idea of Unity.

Now we know:

Awww, no LCARS.

I remember that episode... quite a good one imo.

Semi-relevant (http://arstechnica.com/apple/news/2010/08/how-star-trek-artists-imagined-the-ipad-23-years-ago.ars).

Yay so we finally won't have to mouseover to see the menu! Unfortunately we have to wait until the late 24th century.

Unfortunately we have to wait until the late 24th century.

Yabbut, Voyager, from the 24th Century, was back in the 20th Century (1996 to be precise) trying to avert disaster in the 29th Century!

And, we wound up with Unity.

It was a very interesting episode. The main antagonist reminded me an awful lot of a recently deceased technology magnate. :-\"

It's kinda like, where does all this gee-whiz tech that we have today come from? Same place it always has...Star Trek of course! :P

Nice thread. I'm pretty sure the X I see in the first icon is for X11 (or X9000)! Seems like Wayland doesn't make it. Wonder what that bodes for Ubuntu.

I'm curious as to what OS this actually is. Looks like the last square icon might be a calculator app. I can almost make out the word "Enter" on the far right menu bar button.

I find it extremely interesting to find a GUI so apparently similar to Unity from back in '96. Doesn't surprise me, however, that it's coming from Star Trek. :)

Anyone know what OS this actually is?

At least they didn't try talking into the mouse like Scotty.

I've gone back to Ubuntu v10.04 LTS for both my laptop's, I hope they get something better sorted by 2013 or I may even have to go back to Windows.

Big square icons? Clearly that was copying tablet interfaces!

Oh this post really made my day! Also it helped a lot in choosing an adequate desktop manager, thank you! :KS

I'm just guessing here, but it looks like a full screen of some sort of CAD software.

Ah, yeah, probably.
