Window Maker internet connection

Hi, I installed Window Maker on my Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Acer laptop. When I logged in to the window maker session it could not connect to the internet - Firefox simply said it could not find the website, wherever I tried. When I logged back in to Gnome Firefox would stop responding - in fact it would alternate between responding and not responding every few seconds. Uninstalling Window Maker has resolved that issue. Does anyone know why this happened and how I can install Window Maker and have everything still work properly?
