I ran my daily update on 10-25-11 and then shut down my laptop for the day. This morning I boot up my computer and all I have is a black top panel with the Desktop menu only. I am running Ubuntu 11.10 (32Bit). I can use my keyboard shortcuts fine but I have no Unity desktop. Even Unity 2D doesn't work. Luckily, I had installed the Gnome Fall-back desktop and booted into that. Using Synaptic, I tried reinstalling Unity, Compiz and simply tried restarting Unity via the Terminal. Still no luck. Is anyone having the same problem and/or have you been able to fix this?

I solved the problem. For some reason my ATI drivers got deactivated. I reactivated the proprietary drivers and that fixed my issues.
