Login problem when switching users

I am using ubuntu 10.10
The first time that I login it works ok.
When I try to switch user and I am trying to type the password it fails.
No matter which keys I am using the password text box remains blank
The only solution is to use ctrl-alt F7 and revert to the user that I was in.
I will appreciate your help

I have the same problem with 11.10.
When switching users first try looks ok, but nothing happens and then I cannot enter any passwords. This worked fine in 11.04.
