Upgraded to 11.10 from 11.04.....why, I can't tell you:(

Now can't update, because my password isn't recognised for
authentication purposes.

I have only ONE password on the system....but this is rejected.

Any SIMPLE thoughts please....??

Try this one ..... http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1863430

At the login screen, press CTRL+ALT+F1.
Login to the terminal with your username and password.
enter the following lines, where {{ username }} == your username:

Code:
cd /home/{{ username }} mv .Xauthority Xauthority.bak

Now press CTRL+ALT+F7.
You should be able to login normally
